CDIA held the Second Wastewater Management Training on 16-19 October 2017 in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It was participated by around 30 officials from Cambodian cities of Kampong Chnnang, Pursat, Serei Saophoan, Stung Sen, and from the Sewerage Management and Construction Department (SMCD) of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) Cambodia.
As the second leg of the wastewater management training first held in Sihanoukville, Cambodia last July, this training further capacitated participants in the aspects of institutional setting, financial management, and community participation towards wastewater management. His Excellency Mr. Vong Pisith, Deputy Director General of the MPWT, presented on institutional setting, particularly the formulation of sewerage management unit at provincial departments. Asian Development Bank Consultant Dr. Fabio Masi, introducing new bio-environmental technologies, delivered a presentation on constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. CDIA’s Senior Infrastructure Finance Specialist Mr. Stuart King also discussed financial management and tariff collection for wastewater management. Cambodia’s Global Action for Environmental Awareness (GAEA) Environment and CSR Manager Ms. Ran Saruom further gave a presentation on engaging the community in wastewater through educational campaigns.
To give participants more hands-on experience and learning, site visits to the pumping station, wastewater treatment plant, and laboratory of Siem Reap Sewerage Management Unit, as well as to the wastewater treatment plant of Siem Reap International Airport were included in the training. Participants expressed that the two-part wastewater management training was indeed fruitful in enhancing their knowledge on this widely important urban development topic in Cambodia.
