Executive Summary Pakse Prefeasibiilty Study – Social Impacts

ES1. The overall aim of this Poverty and Social Impact Assessment (PSIA) is to improve the understanding of the social, economic and cultural realities of poverty in Pakse to assess the potential impacts of the priority projects, and to propose interventions for next steps.
ES2. The study area includes Pakse District, two villages in Bachiang District, plus parts of Phonthong District on the western side of the Mekong.
ES3. The majority (app. 95%) of the ethnic groups in Pakse and Phonthong districts are the Tai Kadai or the Lao speaking group, the minorities are the Mon-Khmer ethnic group who migrated from the southern districts of Champasack or other southern provinces of Lao PDR and the foreign migrants (Vietnamese and Chinese). Most of the Mon-Khmer ethnic group live in Bachiang District.
ES4. Methodology for carrying out poverty assessment involves group discussions with poor households and households interviews of about 5% of the total households in Pakse District in order to obtain both quantitative and qualitative data on the nature of poverty in Pakse. (…)
