GVMC Releases Preliminary Draft of City Development Plan

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Greater Visakhapatnam municipal corporation (GVMC) has released a preliminary draft of the city development plan (CDP) that is designed to take into account the city’s needs for the next 15 to 20 years. According to the draft plan, GVMC will focus on nine key areas including water supply, urban slum development, traffic and transportation, sewerage and solid waste management at a cost of Rs 6024.82 crore by 2020.
Briefing the media about the draft CDP here on Friday, GVMC officials said that they had prepared the preliminary draft after taking up feasibility studies as well as meetings with stakeholders and peoples’ representatives in the last one year.
Out of Rs 6024.82 crore, the corporation has given top priority to water supply at an estimated cost of Rs 2184.32 crore, which takes up 36.26% of the total sectoral investments (TSI). The next priority sector is urban poor, where GVMC proposes to take up various works, including construction of houses for the homeless at a proposed investment of Rs 1509.5 crore, accounting for 25.05% share of the CDP. An amount of Rs 784.95 crore has been mooted for traffic and transportation, which translates into a 13.03% share of the TSI.
