The water transport network in Kochi is all set to get a boost. The Kochi Corporation has decided to upgrade it by taking up the recommendations mooted by Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA), which conducted a study for the betterment of water transport sector of Kochi.
The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) which is keen on developing an advanced water transport system for the city will join the bandwagon and provide support to the civic body’s efforts. The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting held at Mayor Tony Chammany’s chamber on Friday.
The primary recommendations made by the CDIA in its report comprise launch of modernised ferry boat services and modernisation of jetties in Kochi and the neighbouring local bodies.
“We have decided to seek the financial as well as technical expertise of the Central and state governments for the purpose. The projects proposed by the CDIA will be implemented as per the guidelines issued by the state government. The Kochi Corporation, KMRL, and CDIA will jointly carry out the projects,” Chammany said.
