CDIA Participates in ICLEI Global Event: Sustainable Tranformation Begins In Cities
June 30, 2015
“Sustainable transformation begins in cities.” This was emphasized during the 6th Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation held on 8-10 June. The event was organized by ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability — a CDIA Regional Partner Organization (RPO), and hosted by the City of Bonn, Germany.
More than 400 participants representing cities, central governments, academe, intermediaries and financiers exchanged knowledge and experiences related to building urban resilience driven by local leadership and investment.
On Day 2, the opening plenary focused on climate financing where CDIA was invited to speak in a panel. CDIA, represented by Joy Bailey, Regional Networking Specialist (photo), presented its tools, particularly the Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and Linking to Finance.
Two case studies on the process and outcome were shared: (1) Xinyu, China where a PFS on Climate Change and Stormwater Management completed in 2013 has a PPTA within ADB commencing in September 2015 with a value of 300Milion USD, half of which from city financing; and (2) Valenzuela, Philippines where a PFS on Integrated Flood Risk Management was jointly funded in 2014 with USAID Adapt Asia-Pacific, and interested financiers include a multilateral bank and a central government agency.
Among the highlights of the 3-day congress were linking disaster risk reduction, sustainable equitable development, adaptation and mitigation into the new urban agenda; reporting climate actions as part of the Compact of Mayors and presentation at the UNFCCC Conference of Parties in December in Paris; mobilizing climate action planning tools; capacity-building; standardized indicators; and an urban food forum.
