Join us in welcoming Iván Rodríguez Drobinski, a dynamic professional from Santander, Spain.

With diverse interests ranging from sports to the arts, Iván channels his passion for law, international trade, and economy into his new role as an Urban Development Specialist at ADB. His path to Asia and the Pacific’s climate bank stemmed from a secondment agreement with ICEX España Exportación e Inversiones, an agency under Spain’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Enterprise.

Iván’s academic journey brought him from the University of Cantabria, where he obtained his Bachelor of Law degree, to the University of Charles III of Madrid, where he earned his master’s degree in European Union Law. Along the way, he took postgraduate courses specializing in Compliance and European Union Studies. He later obtained an MBA in International Management from the Menéndez Pelayo International University, further enriching his academic profile.

Before joining ADB, Iván had been an international trade and investment advisor for the Chamber of Commerce of the Embassy of Spain in Russia. Stationed in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, he facilitated trade and investment – emphasizing sustainable urban development – between Spain and a multitude of countries. This experience solidified his commitment to helping cities address their most pressing challenges.

As part of the Strategy and Partnerships team within ADB’s Water and Urban Development Sector Group, Iván will be performing various functions, from researching urban development issues to providing technical assistance to developing member countries.

He will also support CDIA, an ADB-managed trust fund bolstered by a €5 million contribution from the Spanish Government. He will contribute to the management of project preparation studies and facilitate capacity-building initiatives.

What drew him to ADB was the institution’s commitment to promoting economic growth and reducing poverty in the region. Seizing the opportunity to combine his expertise in international trade with the pursuit of sustainable urban development, Iván has set his sights on leveraging his skills toward transformative change in cities.

He hopes to not only take advantage of the networking opportunities that go with his new role but also learn from and collaborate with experts in the field, build his project management skills, and deepen his knowledge of sustainable development.

Yet, it is not just about professional growth for Iván. Contributing to urban development solutions is both a personal challenge and a privilege – a chance to test his limits while helping create more livable and sustainable cities.

As Iván embarks on this new chapter of his career, he eagerly anticipates the challenges and discoveries in his one-year stint with ADB-CDIA. Committed to excellence since his academic years, Ivan approaches this opportunity with confidence and optimism, ready to make meaningful impacts through his urban development work.
