ADB-CDIA to Undertake Climate-Resilient Water and Sanitation Services Project Preparation in Uzbekistan
March 29, 2025

ADB-CDIA is set to support the preparation of the Climate-Resilient Water and Sanitation Services Project in Uzbekistan, its second technical assistance in the country. The project, pipelined for ADB funding, aims to provide inclusive, reliable, and sustainable water and sanitation services in the provinces of Andijan, Djizzak, and Fergana, and the regions of Uzbekistan’s autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan.
Uzbekistan, Central Asia’s most populous country, sources 90% of its water from mountains in neighboring countries. It is highly vulnerable to climate change, experiencing temperature changes, precipitation shifts, and acute weather events. These challenges threaten the water supply and sanitation sector, impacting health, food security, and social well-being, particularly for the poor.
In line with the project’s objectives to expand water and sanitation services while addressing climate vulnerabilities, and enhancing public health and economic conditions, ADB-CDIA will support the preliminary designs of two main water supply treatment plants and seven small municipal wastewater treatment plants, as well as the procurement of priority infrastructure. Additionally, it will introduce and operationalize smart water management systems and promote awareness of water conservation, health, sanitation, and hygiene, with a focus on empowering women and vulnerable groups. It will further build the capacity of the Uzsuvtaminot Joint Stock Company (UJSC) to improve water supply and sanitation service provision; and boost municipal governance, climate resilience, and gender mainstreaming.
The PPS is expected to start by the first half of 2025.
