Iván Rodríguez Drobinski Shares Reflections on His ADB-CDIA Engagement
March 29, 2025

For Iván Rodríguez Drobinski, his secondment with ADB-CDIA was more than a professional stint. It was a transformative journey that deepened his appreciation and understanding of urban development and the mechanisms by which city visions and project ideas turn into tangible infrastructure projects for the benefit of the people.
Iván joined ADB-CDIA in March 2024 as a secondee from the Government of Spain, one of CDIA’s financing partners. As an Urban Development Specialist, he performed tasks related to project management, outreach, and knowledge sharing – from researching urban development issues to providing technical assistance to developing member countries.
Reflecting on his one-year journey, Iván shared key takeaways: “I gained a clearer view of how development work happens from the ground up. I learned not only how projects are shaped but also how partnerships and funding move them forward.”
While working on early-stage project preparation and trust fund operations, Iván also saw the value of teamwork, which deeply motivated him. “The collaboration across ADB teams and partner cities demonstrated how much knowledge and commitment are behind every outcome,” he explained.
Remarkable Moments
Among the many experiences Iván had at ADB-CDIA, three moments stood out. One key highlight for him was when he supported the Smart Cities Development Project in Bangladesh. Meeting local stakeholders gave him a better perspective of what ADB-CDIA projects mean on the ground. “It’s one thing to talk about infrastructure, but it’s another to see how it affects people’s lives,” said Iván.
His work with ADB on its bilateral engagement with the Spanish Government, including organizing the Spain and Portugal Learning Week, was another standout experience for Iván. It gave him firsthand insight into donor relations and how mutual trust and coordination can enhance development outcomes.
Moreover, his involvement in the design and coordination of the City-to-City Learning Program enabled him to see the value of peer exchange and cross-regional collaboration in driving innovation. “Seeing how cities learn from each other is one of the most practical lessons I’ll take with me,” said Iván.
CDIA’s Value to Cities
From Iván’s perspective, CDIA’s impact goes beyond developing project preparation studies. “By collaborating closely with local governments and incorporating institutional change and capacity development, CDIA empowers cities to build skills and systems that endure beyond the project lifespan, ensuring their readiness to face future challenges. This is where CDIA’s long-term value lies,” he explained.
Looking Ahead
When asked if his experience met his expectations before joining ADB-CDIA, Iván was unequivocal in his response: “Absolutely! My expectations were not only met but exceeded. I was given responsibility, mentorship, and a space to grow. I am deeply grateful for the trust and support,” he said.
“I leave with sharper skills, a better urban development perspective, warm memories, and a strong appreciation for the mission of ADB and CDIA. I hope to keep contributing to this field and look forward to crossing paths again,” he added.
ADB-CDIA Team’s Appreciation
The team deeply valued Iván’s contributions during his secondment. His insightful perspectives, collaborative spirit, and friendship will always be cherished. The team warmly wishes him continued success in both his personal and professional journeys.
