Key Development Issues:
Tashkent faces growing urban mobility challenges despite having an extensive metro and bus network. Public transport accounts for only 2% of trips, resulting in increasing reliance on private vehicles, worsening traffic congestion, deteriorating air quality, and rising greenhouse gas emissions. These challenges highlight the need for a more integrated, efficient, and climate-responsive public transport system that can encourage a shift toward sustainable urban mobility.
Details of Cooperation:
To address these challenges, CDIA is supporting the preparation of the Tashkent Green Mobility Project through a project preparation study. The assistance will undertake feasibility studies, due diligence, and the preparation of conceptual or preliminary engineering designs for priority investments, including multimodal interchange hubs, e-bus depot upgrades, and climate-resilient transport corridors. It will also prepare technical specifications and bidding documents for e-buses and charging infrastructure, while strengthening the capacity of local transport agencies through improved e-bus operations, institutional development, and support for the preparation of Uzbekistan’s National Transport Strategy 2030.
Expected Development Impacts:
The project is expected to improve urban mobility by strengthening multimodal connectivity, advancing the adoption of low-carbon public transport, and enhancing the climate resilience of transport infrastructure. By delivering investment-ready designs, strengthening institutional capacity, and supporting strategic transport planning, the PPS will help accelerate the implementation of the Tashkent Green Mobility Project, encourage a shift from private vehicles to public transport, and contribute to reduced congestion, lower emissions, and improved urban livability in Tashkent.
